Ten stories, three never before published, extend the range of Box, best known for his Joe Pickett mystery series. Four of the stories do feature Pickett or his falconer friend Nate Romanowzki, but others display new characters. All but one are set in Wyoming, and each highlights the great sense of place that characterizes Box's fiction. While not all of the stories are equally strong, Box's spare style works well in short fiction. This work deserves to share shelf space with Annie Proulx's Close Range: Wyoming Stories. David Chandler, who has read all of the Pickett books, delivers another fine performance.
