Silence in Her Eyes

Leah’s akinetopsia, or motion blindness, shapes how she sees the world. With her other heightened senses and a small network of trusted helpers, she manages to make it work—until Alice moves in next door. Alice, with her sobbing and spying from behind drawn curtains, eventually befriends Leah and confides that she is fleeing an abusive husband. When Leah hears Alice being attacked through their shared wall, she wastes no time rushing over and stabbing the man she believes has been tormenting her friend. In the aftermath, however, Leah realizes that, once again, she may not have seen everything. Though best known for historical fiction, Correa (The Night Travellers) crafts a compelling, character-driven psychological thriller. Narrator Suehyla El-Attar Young gives an expressive and engaging performance, capturing the complex, often confusing way Leah experiences the world. Her delivery of the intricate narrative yields a riveting listening experience.
