Baldacci’s (
The 6:20 Man) stand-alone psychological thriller does not disappoint. Former police detective and single mom Mickey Gibson now works for ProEye, a company that uncovers the hidden assets of exceptionally wealthy people who are cheating their creditors. Mickey is contacted by Arlene Robinson, a mysterious woman who claims to also work for ProEye and asks Mickey to go to an absconded arms dealer’s mansion and inventory its assets. When Mickey starts photographing the meager contents of the house, however, she discovers a secret room and the dead body of Daniel Pottinger, a former mob accountant. Things go from bad to worse when Mickey realizes that ProEye hasn’t heard of Arlene, and that Mickey herself is now a number-one murder suspect. Lisa Flanagan and Corey Carthew team up for an excellent dual narration of this twisted story. Carthew gives voice to secondary male characters, while Flanagan depicts Mickey with an especially adept Southern accent.
VERDICT Though the extensive descriptions of psychological trauma occasionally wear thin, patient listeners will enjoy the sparring between Mickey and the unknown person who is determined to destroy her. Baldacci’s many fans will be captivated.
