Sebastian Harlow is a master thief who, disguised as the Black Flamingo, delights in stealing from the unimaginably wealthy, totally corrupt elites who make up Miami’s underground occult scene. Harlow’s motives aren’t all that altruistic, however: he’s a narcissistic hedonist who steals to fund his lavish lifestyle. While infiltrating a museum in order to grab an ancient tablet containing the soul of a Jewish mystic, Harlow discovers a document describing a collar capable of enslaving supernatural beings. After learning that the collar belongs to one Thorndike Scar—the wealthiest, most corrupt of the aforementioned elites—Harlow sneaks into Scar’s compound, where he discovers a captured angel named Ezekiel who has suffered centuries of torment by his captors. Harlow and Scar go on the run and—as they battle paramilitary thugs, neo-Nazis, and a particularly vicious museum curator—begin to fall in love. Can an earthbound angel and a hedonistic narcissist really hope for a happy ending? If Harlow can get out of his own way and learn the value of sacrificing on behalf of others, they just might.
VERDICT Part crime thriller, part supernatural romance, with a remarkably charismatic queer protagonist. Tremendously fun from start to finish.
