Snow White is the daughter of a wealthy Nevada silver baron and a Crow woman who was forced to marry him, then died after giving birth. Snow grows up a stranger in her own home after her father marries a fine New England lady who makes it clear that there is no room in her heart for the copper-skinned girl with black hair and eyes. So Snow dresses in man's clothes and flees to "Indian Territory" out west. She takes up residence with seven outlaws, befriends the animals of the forest, dodges the Pinkerton detective who's pursuing her, and meets her death many times.
VERDICT Valente's (Palimpsest; In the Night Garden) talent for telling stories that have the cadence and grace of poetry makes her a perfect interpreter of classic stories. Her fans will appreciate the humor and artistry in this imaginative retelling of one of the world's most popular fairy tales.
