Verity Travers is no stranger to tracking down criminals, having long helped her brother, a former Bow Street Runner, with his investigations, in addition to pursuing her own private investigations. So when she and her friend Elizabeth are robbed after attending the theater in London in 1803, it’s natural that Verity begins sleuthing in order to retrieve the letter that’s been stolen from her friend. Bow Street Runner Nathaniel Denning is investigating the same robbery, and Verity resents his protectiveness toward her, as it is hampering her crime-solving MO, but they eventually decide to collaborate. Then Elizabeth is blackmailed by the letter’s thief, who demands a specific painting from her family’s collection or else they’ll reveal a secret that could destroy Elizabeth’s reputation in society and end her engagement to Lord Blakely.
VERDICT With her upbringing as a born-out-of-wedlock child in an actress’s home, Verity is a unique and admirable heroine, and readers will fall for Nathaniel’s tender side, especially with his parents. This novel is a stand-alone, but start with Barker’s A Heart Worth Stealing, as the protagonists play a supporting role.
