Everybody Loves Raymond creator Rosenthal treats listeners to an enthusiastic tour of the places, people, and recipes from his popular travel documentary series on Netflix,
Somebody Feed Phil. Fans of the show will be delighted to hear that as a narrator, Rosenthal brings his trademark blend of infectious wonder and generosity to this audio. Bursting with video snippets, recipes read by the chefs who designed them, and cameo appearances by relatives of legendary chefs, this audio is a full-bodied celebration. Listeners will revel in the production’s bonus content, such as Rosenthal’s hilarious but also endearing interactions with his parents. With this said, some listeners may want to grab a copy of the print book, if only to take in funny outtakes from the show and savor pictures of the food, marketplaces, and people. There is much to love here, but listeners should be forewarned that the recipes are available in an attached PDF; while it’s not always terribly riveting to hear readings of recipes, those who are unable to access the PDF might miss out.
VERDICT A charming feast for the ears, to be devoured by armchair travelers, home cooks, and anyone who loves food, people, and stories.
