Determined to follow his late father’s wishes, Valentine Layton, the Duke of Malvern, proposes to Arabella Tarleton, a childhood friend who has fallen on hard times. Unfortunately, his proposal is more of a business arrangement than a romantic gesture and is offensive enough to cause Arabella to run away. Arabella’s twin brother, Bonny, guilts Valentine into chasing after her. Bonny and Valentine catch up to Arabella and her companion, Peggy, more than once but always with disastrous results and with Arabella fleeing once again. Throughout their pursuit, increasingly bizarre circumstances interrupt Bonny and Valentine’s sexual explorations. Despite this, Valentine gets to know the flighty Bonny’s better qualities and not-so-secret predilections and reluctantly realizes Bonny brings out emotions and fantasies he’s kept in check for a lifetime.
