Practicing witch, pagan, TikTok influencer, and debut author Castanea breaks down the practice of witchcraft for beginners, while also seeking out ways to decolonize the practice. Narrated by the author, this book takes a broad look at the many facets of witchcraft, along with its history and modern usage. Much of the book centers on basic concepts appropriate for beginners, including grounding, cleansing, banishing, and meditation. Acknowledging their place as a white, woman-presenting witch, the author also covers weightier topics such as the cultural appropriation and efforts to decolonize the craft. Regrettably, these important discussions are touched on superficially, and listeners will likely want to learn more. While Castanea set out to write the book they needed as a new witch, their unsophisticated language and presentation takes away from the impact of the book. Unfortunately, it does not translate well to audio, owing to extensive lists of materials and instructions on how to perform various spells for luck, love, protection, and justice.
VERDICT While this witchcraft primer may appeal to beginning witches, listeners might be better served by more in-depth titles such as Paige Vanderbeck’s Green Witchcraft or Mystic Dylan’s Witchcraft for the Home.
