Spike Lee’s films are known for two things: amazing scripts and a stunning and unique visual style. This book is all about the visuals—it’s an oversize collection of hundreds of behind-the-scenes photos, taken by the filmmaker’s brother David Lee. The photos cover all of Spike Lee’s feature films, documentaries, commercials, and television shows, and it will quickly become clear to readers how much he values certain actors and filmmakers; people like Denzel Washington, Ernest Dickerson, Joie Lee, Ossie Davis, Delroy Lindo, and Samuel L. Jackson appear in so many of his projects. The pictures are wonderful and engaging, but with only the briefest of text from the filmmaker before each section, anyone unfamiliar with his films may have a hard time appreciating the full context of the images. On the other hand, for those who know only his most famous films, this could be the perfect enticement to see more of his work.
VERDICT A welcome tribute to the career of Spike Lee, best appreciated by his fans.
