Forty-four-year-old Nora Glass has always been a planner, an organizer. She's managed a demanding career as a journalist, the essentially single parenthood of her cantankerous teenage daughter, Ellie, and the cleaning up of the messes left behind by her wilder, less responsible twin, Mariana, with the skill and dedication of an architect. Then, something happens that she can't manage: a tragic, incurable disease that will shatter the life that Nora has worked so hard to build, leaving behind only fragments of the person she was. No stranger to tough topics, author Herron (Pack up the Moon) presents the brutal reality of Alzheimer's disease through three very different voices—Nora, Ellie, and Mariana—each suffering from the ramifications of Nora's illness. While the journey these women must face together is heartbreaking, their story is ultimately uplifting: a poignant, profound ode to the enduring and redemptive power of love.
VERDICT Very much like Lisa Genova's Still Alice (although the writing here is better!), this title is sure to resonate with fans of issue-driven domestic fiction such as that of Jodi Picoult and Genova and will have the book clubs lining up.
