Art has always been more than just a viewing experience. Beyond looking at art, one is supposed to feel it and be inspired. Aitken (
Broken Screen; Sleepwalkers) took the idea of art surrounding people and transformed it with his "Station to Station" project. Already a multimedia artist, the author was familiar with the concept of not just painting a portrait or playing a song exclusively. With his new project, he gave performers an opportunity to travel the country by train and take inspiration from everything around them, such as the train itself or the stops taken along the way. At each stop the artists emerged to create a "happening" with tents and booths featuring paintings, music, performance art, etc., allowing the public to interact with the art. This book features photographs from the travels as well as images from the happenings taking place across the country. It also includes interviews with artists who joined Aitken on his journey.
VERDICT Readers interested in the modern multimedia art movement will find this behind-the-scenes look at Aitken's project extremely provocative. Compelling conversations and photographs capture moving moments along the way.
