DEBUT Samantha Harker, the daughter of Dracula’s killer, has been given the chance to step out of her role as a researcher at the Royal Society for the Study of Abnormal Phenomena. Sam’s new partner is Dr. Helena Moriarty, daughter of Sherlock Holmes’s notorious nemesis and loner whose partners all seem to die under mysterious circumstances. The unlikely pair are sent to Belle Époque Paris, where powerful men are being torn apart by a mysterious creature called the Beast. The two race through the streets of Paris trying to catch the mysterious killer before they strike again. The hunt takes them to the most elite fashion houses and perfumeries, to wild parties, and into the shadowed corners of the catacombs that snake beneath the city. All the while, Sam tries to determine if her partner can be trusted, hide her ability to channel into the minds of monsters, and figure out what these murders have to do with her grandfather’s mysterious disappearance a decade before.
VERDICT While the novel’s world is based on well-known Dracula lore, Morris delivers a fresh, unique tale that will delight mystery, fantasy, and horror readers alike. Give it to fans of C.L. Polk, Alix E. Harrow, and T. Kingfisher.
