Hill’s third workplace romance in her series “The Grants of DC” (following
Forever Mine). Lexington Randall is determined to save her family’s business, and she thinks that Montgomery Grant’s new development is just the project to do it. They meet and sparks immediately fly. The connection is compelling, but subplots involving exes, missing money, and various other scandals complicate the relationship. Hill does an admirable job pulling in all of her threads and creating a cohesive story, but readers may wonder if the novel needed them all. Hill avoids internal relationship drama—her leads are immediately attracted to each other and act on it—but then she piles on external forces to attempt to keep them apart. The strong characters may interest readers in Hill’s future books or her backlist.
VERDICT Though the leads have plenty of chemistry, the romance gets a bit lost, with a few too many subplots and characters for a novel of this length.
