Submerged

Cemetery Dance. Sept. 2013. 520p. ISBN 9781587673511. $40. HORROR
COPY ISBN
To paraphrase the late Ray Bradbury, something wicked down there lies. Monteleone's (The Reckoning; Blood of the Lamb) is the tale of a top-secret high-tech German submarine, the U5001, which is carrying an equally secret cargo as it attempts to escape the death throes of the Third Reich. The sub is supposed to rendezvous with another German ship but instead is sent on a rescue mission to the polar ice cap. Fast forward to the present, and evidence of the sub has been found in the Chesapeake Bay by members of a diving club. The sub has many secrets, including ones that could change the course of history.
VERDICT Although well written, the book is overlong, lacks originality, and contains few surprises and not very much horror. Nor is the plot as controversial and intriguing as those in Monteleone's previous works.
