Lady Andee Harrow is an empath and soldier with a deadly secret. Lord Galen Fairren is a scholar who is ashamed of his attraction to men. Malcolm is a slave who is in love with Galen. When Andee and Galen agree to an arranged marriage, he is unable to consummate it owing to his shame over his feelings for Malcolm. Andee invites Malcolm to be their unofficial spouse, and things take a turn for the better. Meanwhile, politics and war must be dealt with, and all three of the protagonists are right in the middle of the action.
VERDICT The third installment in Bachar's "Cy'ren Rising" series (after Nightfall and Morningstar) will please its fans by focusing not only on the male/male/female romance of three established characters but by bringing back fan favorites Bryn and Jace. Readers who haven't read the first two books may be confused by the already acknowledged feelings among the three protagonists, preventing them from investing in the birth of the relationship. The adventures are interesting, however, so fans of m/m/f will probably enjoy this work as long as they also like sf heavily interspersed with a few sex scenes.
