OK, true confession time: How many of us stand in front of a mirror and do that pull up/tug back face thing so we can see what we'd look like with a face-lift? Jackie Hoffman and Emily Askin did just that (and a little bit more) from an unusual perspective: they are both comedians. We follow them from the initial decision through the doctor visits, alternatives, and discussions with friends and family to the day of surgery and the happy conclusions. There is a lot of wise-cracking and self-deprecation, of course, but there's also brutal self-examination and touching honesty. The film adds historical context with details of some of the more famous comediennes who experimented with plastic surgery, including Joan Rivers, Totie Fields, and Fanny Brice, and ends with an unexpected twist.
VERDICT Fun and interesting to watch; library users will be drawn in by the expert storytelling.
