This intensely personal program documents a family coping with the knowledge that their young child has terminal cancer. Just as most creative people incorporate their own life into their work, Ryan Green, a designer of video games, funnels his feelings into an interactive game, That Dragon, Cancer. The "game" allows one to experience the tragedy from a variety of perspectives and is received with a bit of critical acclaim. Perhaps being able to share their trauma offers the Greens some measure of relief. However, the underlying pain still shapes their lives and those of their other children. As fate would have it, Joel lives longer than expected but eventually succumbs before reaching school age. The parents are sustained by their faith through his final days and beyond. Some viewers may see this film as depressing, others, uplifting, but no one will walk away unmoved.
