The African Gaze: Photography, Cinema and Power

Sall’s book is inspired by a course of the same name she taught at New York’s New School, where she was a lecturer. The founder of SUNU: Journal of African Affairs, Critical Thought + Aesthetics, Sall draws on her background in human rights and cultural studies to show how artistic expression in photography and cinema has sparked discussions on African history, identity, power dynamics, and representation. In addition to introducing readers to prominent filmmakers and photographers of African heritage, Sall includes contributions from scholars and curators, archival imagery, and previously unpublished artist interviews. The book showcases 25 photographers and 25 filmmakers—among them, Malick Sidibé, Sanlé Sory, Ousmane Sembène, and Seydou Keïta. Each artist is introduced with a biographical profile that offers insight into their background, unique voice, and contributions to the current renaissance of African art.
