Unmarried and 42 years old, considered well past her prime, Lady Augusta “Gus” Colebrook and her twin sister Julia are asked to rescue a friend’s goddaughter, Lady Caroline Thorne, who is being held captive by her husband. On the way to the Thorne’s country estate, they are attacked by a highwayman, whom they soon recognize as Lord Evan Belford, an exiled nobleman on the run. After Gus and Julia return to London, Gus can’t get their adventure, or the man, off her mind. Bucking society’s expectations, she and Julia set off to prove Lord Evan’s innocence, all while helping women in need. Goodman’s (
The Dark Days Deceit) series starter is a rousing feminist tale set in Regency England. Kristin Atherton gives an excellent performance of the headstrong and snarky Gus and her timider but still daring sister.
VERDICT Though the cover appears sedate, there is never a dull moment in this hilarious, action-filled tale. Share with fans of Amy Stewart’s “Kopp Sisters” series.
