In this new series start, the now destitute and secret-ridden Gillian Phelps retreats to the country, staying with a kind benefactress, Mrs. Brownlow, and all but hiding from high society. Yet, she misses her dearest friends, known as the Huntresses, and decides to attend the house party of Artemis Jonquil where she meets Scott Sarvol, an American who has inherited a couple of debt-ridden estates. Gillian undergoes conflicting attitudes toward Scott, first of extreme wariness and then a sudden change to reliance, when Mrs. Brownlow becomes seriously ill and he proves to be unexpectedly helpful. During Scott’s stay within the Brownlow household, he and Gillian grow close, but both Scott’s perilous finances and Gillian’s family secrets stand in the way of their happiness.
VERDICT While the early plotting and characterizations are a bit rocky in this sweet, slow-burning romance, fans of Eden’s “The Jonquil Brothers” series will be delighted to see familiar characters from the author’s other books return throughout this series kick-off.
