Pulitzer Prize–winning Powers (coauthor, Fenway Park) who worked for the Boston Globe for more than 40 years, offers a second edition of his love letter to Boston. Thirteen sections detail how and why Boston is the way it is. The book includes funny and punny chapter titles such as “Wayuh We Ah,” “How We Tok,” and “Weather or Not?” It also provides a short history lesson about the city and Powers’s take on what forms its character. Humorous illustrations by Wallace add to this jokey but loving look at how Bostonians speak, live, drive, walk, and eat. The combination of text and images also spotlights the traits that are typical of the neighborhoods of the city, along with the area’s architectural hits and misses. This title also contains quotes from famous people about their perspectives of Boston.
VERDICT A wonderfully written homage to Boston that’s sure to please readers who are either from there or have relocated to the area. It also gives readers who live elsewhere plenty of reasons to visit.
