In this new series that kicks off with the same energy as Wight’s “Cradle” books, wizard Varic Vallenar embarks upon a spacefaring adventure. Attempting a spell never before seen in galactic history, Varic seeks to become the most powerful wizard in existence. The spell succeeds, but by summoning shadows of his alternate selves, he gains not only their knowledge and skills but also their failures and deaths. Now, granted another chance, Varic must save the galaxy, face down dangerous threats, chase ancient legends, and stand against their greatest enemy—the Iron Legion. While ambitious and highly imaginative, this epic occasionally tries to do too much and becomes a little messy as a result. Still, for readers in search of pure entertainment, it delivers plenty of action and sharp humor. The setting, both ethereal and analytical, successfully blends elements of fantasy and science fiction.
VERDICT With wands and plasma pistols, sigils on spacesuits, magic and machines, possessive spaceships and power rangers, this is a chaotically fun space fantasy that revels in its playful and creative energy. Great for fans of Becky Chambers and John Scalzi.
