As an adult, Jonah Kirk looks back on three formative years of his life, when he was between nine and 11 years old. An African American musical prodigy growing up in a major city during the 1960s, Jonah was just beginning to explore his own gifts when a run-in with a group of dangerous people led to shattering consequences. Despite a few references to a ghost or paranormal beings, this coming-of-age story set in an era of racial and social upheaval is not a typical Koontz tale. Although the plot occasionally drags, Koontz's well-drawn characters ensure that the listener's attention never wanes. Korey Jackson's slow-paced, calm, and composed voice reflects the story's overall ambiance.
VERDICT Will appeal to Koontz fans as well as those interested in 1960s settings or coming-of-age works. ["Koontz's stand-alone is like dynamite, with a long slow fuse that smolders quietly until exploding brilliantly," read the review of the Bantam hc, LJ Xpress Reviews, 6/27/14.]
