Berg’s third book set in the fictional small town of Mason, MO, features some of the same characters from The Story of Arthur Truluv and Night of Miracles. Iris is still teaching baking classes and comes to the rescue when one of the members of the “confession club” decides to prepare a complicated and time-consuming dessert for the meeting. Iris and her landlady/housemate, Maddy, are soon invited to join the exclusive club. This is especially convenient as both Iris and Maddy face challenges in their romantic relationships. Maddy is having trouble opening up to her husband, whom she left behind in New York, and Iris has become involved with the town’s newest resident, a mystery man who comes with some hefty baggage. While the members of the club are used to shocking revelations and are experts at keeping secrets, Iris and Maddy are poised to test their fellow club members’ limits.
VERDICT Fans of the series will delight in the familiar characters and setting, and newcomers will find Mason’s charming residents and small-town vibe a comfort. For readers of the author’s other titles and those who enjoy small-town fiction, including the works of Fannie Flagg. [See Prepub Alert, 5/13/19.]
