Impulsive archaeologist Chloe and down-on-his-luck historian Ben land at the doorstep of the mysterious Dr. Sparling, who wants to learn more about the reclusive villagers of Tir Mallacht, an Irish village cut off from the rest of civilization for the past 200 years. Ben and Chloe agree to interview the superstitious villagers, with the promise of a big payday. When a little girl tells Chloe and Ben about a nameless figure who, once conjured, will follow you until you’ve seen him three times, the final time being your last, they laugh it off as the silly superstition of a delusional cult—until they see it, watching them from afar. While there’s a predictable horror formula—a mysterious stranger hires an eclectic group of individuals to research an undoubtedly dangerous and spooky myth/phenomenon—Shine (
The Watchers) still manages to sprinkle suspense and absolute terror across the pages.
VERDICT Deliciously eerie, this may get off to a slow start, but it builds intense momentum and suspense in a spooky setting that is so immersive, readers will not be able to shake that feeling of dread and foreboding long after they’ve closed the book and the curtains, for good measure.
