DEBUT In the Galactic Imperium of the Myriad Worlds, young Saef Sinclair-Maru, prodigy of a long and distinguished line of Imperial fleet officers, outscores all current and former candidates on the fleet command test. However, due to political rivalries and connections ends up with command of a 200-year-old frigate, the
Tanager, whose outdated technology and weapons make it ready for the interstellar scrap heap. At this point in time, there has been trouble with a rebel force which destroyed an imperial battleship, but under its new commander, Tanager sets out on a simple scouting cruise to observe activities around Delta Three. Saef’s first mission takes a sudden turn, amidst assassination attempts and a multitude of spies and traitors, into a serious battle. Is this a rebellion or an empire-wide invasion of non-humans?
VERDICT In Mersault’s debut novel, his Galactic Imperium becomes amazingly real, and the plot is twisty enough to keep the reader turning pages. Highly recommended for epic science fiction fans.
