Set in London in the 1890s, the story begins in the bowels of a prison, where a special prisoner is being subjected to horrific treatment, similar to what he does to his victims. After a locomotive crashes into the prison and some of the vilest inhabitants are loosed upon London, the book takes a dark and very gory turn, featuring Jack the Ripper and recounting some of his murders. Narrator John Curless does an excellent job with the accents and voices, but the book is still difficult to follow when it jumps from character to character.
VERDICT Recommended for medium-size and larger public libraries with previous volumes in this series, or where Victorian England and Jack the Ripper books are popular. ["Devotees are sure to be delighted, but Grecian's latest would also make a satisfying introduction to the series," read the review of the Putnam hc, LJ 4/15/14.]
