This bittersweet, sad story of the hubris and death of a king and his people includes the tale of the long-lost, legendary city of Gondolin and the making of its legend. It is made even more poignant by the knowledge that it is likely the last collaboration of Christopher Tolkien with the notes left by his father, J.R.R. Tolkien. Christopher, 93, expects this to be his last work. This volume completes his studies and recreations of Elvish mythology, begun in The Children of Hurin and continued in Beren and Luthien. Like those previous works, it compares the original author’s many versions of the same story. It is both timeless and foundational, as the events at Gondolin presage all that comes later in the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy, and beautifully tells a timeless narrative of the fall of empire, and pride going before that fall.
VERDICT Every Tolkien aficionado, and they are legion, will want to read this book, both for the story it tells and as a final collaboration between this legendary father-and-son duo
