Psychology student Olivia Eriksen hails from a family with a long history of psychiatric disorders. Her family is well known among true-crime buffs, as psychopathy precipitated their crimes over the years. Hoping to understand her family history, Oliva has spent her academic career exploring the nature vs. nurture debate, focusing on whether psychopathy is inherited or created. When she gets an invitation to a remote family retreat, she and her fiancé head to Oregon, where she hopes to talk to her elusive grandfather and settle the debate once and for all. Then, amid a violent storm, a favorite cousin is found dead, and all signs point to Oliva. As Olivia tries to find the killer, true-crime podcaster Birdie Tan complicates matters, revealing another mystery that may have dire consequences for Olivia and her family. Narrated by Jesse Vilinsky, Sura Siu, Jennifer Jill Araya, and Arnell Powell, the full-cast recording is perfect for this fast-paced, time-hopping novel.
VERDICT Some may guess the surprise ending, but even so, Marr’s (Strangers We Know) latest will keep listeners engrossed until the end. Highly recommended for fans of Lucy Foley, Ruth Ware, and Gillian Flynn.
