When she was seven, Penny’s mother threw her down a flight of stairs, sending her into a coma. When she awakes, she finds that she has developed special abilities, including having an eidetic memory and seeing numbers as colors. Her mother’s alcohol-use disorder worsens, and her father disappears, save for the yearly card he sends Penny on her birthday. On her 21st birthday, however, everything changes, as her father states that this is the last card he’ll be sending. Penny decides to leave her bubble to find him. Wholly unprepared for the outside world, she meets Travis and Fia, who each help her track her father down. On their journey, the group is caught up in a series of wild events and runs afoul of both mobsters and government agents. In California, they make a terrible discovery, but a more worldly Penny seems poised to handle it. Narrator Gina Rogers captures the confusion Penny experiences when she finds herself in “the wild.” She ably handles moments of high action while sensitively portraying Penny’s coming of age.
