The Ghost in You

Anna, assistant to unlicensed P.I. Ethan Reckless, takes center stage in Brubaker and Phillips’s latest “Reckless” noir mystery. Anna stays behind when Ethan’s latest case calls him out of town. Enter Evilina, a retired B-movie scream queen seeking to learn whether her opulent mansion (recently inherited from an obsessed fan) is haunted. Anna’s investigation soon uncovers the tragic death of the silent movie star who built the property and the horrific massacre of the second family to live there. If it’s not haunted, how to explain that rancid smell in the basement? Then Anna’s distracted by the sudden reappearance of her estranged mother, who wants Anna to come to her wedding to a new-age guru she met in rehab. Anna is immediately suspicious of the guy—is that intuition, or lingering resentment clouding her judgment?
