Nearly 20 years after taking on the Sheriff of Nottingham, Robin of Locksley and his love Marian are married and raising children. Their eldest, Mary, knows her marriage may come soon, but she steals into the forest for freedom, while John comes of age in his father’s footsteps. The youngest, Eleanor, is an old, quiet soul. Some whisper that she is a changeling. Now that King John holds the throne, Robin swears fealty to safeguard those who look to him for protection and guidance, though others feel he has shown his belly. When the precarious truce is broken and the Locksley children are stolen, Robin and Marian look to those around them for assistance, including the old ghosts within Sherwood.
VERDICT The first of the “Locksley Chronicles” (Heirs of Locksley is due out in Aug.), Vaughn’s (The Immortal Conquistador) look at what comes after Robin Hood is a delightful novella, filled with lively action and characters who continue to stretch the original story even further.
