Gowda's first novel, Secret Daughter, disclosed the story of one little girl and two families, in India and America. Her richly and forthrightly told new book is about a boy and a girl from India who remain connected though they eventually live continents apart. Anil Patel, "the golden son," who's always wanted to be a doctor, has left his village behind and is a resident at an American hospital. There he experiences culture clash, some real disillusion, and the confirmation of his love of medicine even as he balances his responsibilities to his family back home. Meanwhile, his childhood friend Leena is trapped in a traditional marriage to an abusive man. Anil's story claims a bigger chunk of the narrative and has the more successful ending, though his tale is also bittersweet.
VERDICT The story can seem longish, but the details are truly told, and fans of family-centered saga will enjoy.
