OrangeReviewStarIn 1997, Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS) agent Shannon Moss is called to a crime scene where the family of Navy SEAL Patrick Mursult was killed. She quickly realizes this will be no simple case of domestic violence. While NCIS agents are often involved in unpacking crimes involving naval personnel, Shannon usually only gets called in when they touch on the top-secret military secrets of the program to explore deep space and time. The prime suspect in the murder investigation is Mursult, who was presumed lost on a space mission years before. That he is back means that he and the rest of the crew of the USS Libra are a national security threat. The plot requires careful attention, but the rewards are a fascinating blend that doesn't skimp on the criminal investigation or the sf. Not surprising that it's already being made into a film.
VERDICT Describing much more than this simple setup would rob the reader of the trippy experience of navigating the time-travel intricacies of this nail-biting speculative thriller from Sweterlitsch (Tomorrow and Tomorrow). [See Prepub Alert, 8/28/17.]
