Artistic designer Hildebrand follows up Herbarium with this beautifully illustrated herb dictionary. The book is printed on heavy paper, and the designs accompany short (two or three paragraphs) descriptions of both common spices, ranging from the common (poppy seed, clove, and cardamom) to the unusual, such as amchoor, ajwain seed, and cubeb. Also included for each entry is the spice's origin and recommendations of what food it could accompany. The designs, which are an important part of the book, are from reproductions of The Grammar of Ornament by 19th-century architect Owen Jones. Jones studied the designs of the Alhambra and the illustrations reflect this style. The last chapter includes recipes for 20 spice mixes.
VERDICT Recommended for large public, academic, or art libraries; however, the reasonable price will make it a possible source for smaller libraries with clientele who appreciate a unique subject with artistic designs.
