Howard's first installment in her "Havenbury" series follows Maddy's return to the village she fled a few years ago after a traumatic event. She has returned to help her godfather, Patrick, as he can't run his pub while he recovers from a heart attack. Maddy works to keep the pub going as she contends with her own anxiety and issues as well as the plans of the pub's greedy landlord. She also meets ex-army psychologist Ben, a trauma specialist intrigued by Maddy. Narrator Emma Powell provides a gentle reading for the various characters and narrative threads. This tale of friendships, self-discovery, trust, and romance is an enjoyable listen.
VERDICT Fans of English village fiction and love stories will relish this well-written title.—Denise Garofalo, Mount Saint Mary Coll. Lib., Newburgh, NY
