In the centerpiece of le Carré's "Karla Trilogy," spymaster George Smiley sends Jerry Westerby, a journalist and sometime spook, to Hong Kong to look into a money-laundering scheme possibly masterminded by Karla, Smiley's Soviet nemesis. Westerby, a minor character in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, the trilogy's first leg, is more flawed than usual for le Carré's heroes—his romantic recklessness constantly puts him in danger.
VERDICT This title is crammed with eccentrics whose bumbling exploits are perfect for Michael Jayston's delivery, which is full of ironic inflections. Another outstanding production of a le Carré masterpiece. [The Knopf hc was a New York Times best seller.—Ed.]
