Imagine having an incredible tale inside you that many in your community would rather not hear; to be treated as an outcast for being a "comfort woman," a World War II ordeal that was out of your control. This is what happened to an estimated 200,000 young Korean women kidnapped and forced into sex slavery by the Japanese army. This effort from director Seok visits with several seemingly ordinary women, all in their eighties and living in a group home in Seoul, South Korea. Those who survived the grueling experience faced another challenge when they came home. Seok captures the daily lives of a handful of elderly halumni (grandmothers) who share their stories, paintings, and songs.
VERDICT This humane vision of their lives brings into intimate focus a story often relegated to the sidelines of history. Recommended.
