In Kelly’s latest travel-based thriller (after
The Villa), Hollie Jenson is a biochemist turned docuseries host of
Bad Medicine, in which she debunks wellness trends and pseudoscientific health claims. Her intended target for season two is Ariel Rose, social media influencer and founder of the Ice Retreat, a wellness resort in the Swiss Alps that claims to cure chronic pain disorders through cold water immersion therapy. Four of Ariel’s clients have died by suicide following their treatments, and another has gone missing. When Hollie is invited to the retreat to interview Ariel, she takes the opportunity to investigate the missing client and is forced to confront her own personal connection to Ariel. Told from three points of view in different timelines, the story behind the Ice Retreat begins to unravel, exposing something more sinister than Hollie could have imagined.
VERDICT Readers who prefer a likable narrator may be slow to warm to Hollie’s icy personality and hidden inner turmoil. But the suspense, the gothic setting, and a few unexpected twists will hook audiences into the mystery of what goes on behind the Ice Retreat’s locked doors.
