The residents of Coopers Chase retirement community are at it again, and Osman continues to please with this fourth book in the “Thursday Murder Club” series (after The Bullet That Missed). There has been another murder, of course, and this time, they must solve it while locating a lost box of heroin, navigating the seamy underbelly of the antiques world, and managing a few tragedies even closer to home. Narrator Fiona Shaw masterfully shifts between each of the pensioner detectives’ distinct personalities and speech affectations, from Ibrahim’s slow, careful speech to Joyce’s warm and conspiratorial tone. Shaw even adds a Canadian accent—the mysterious and dangerous Garth—to her impressive repertoire. Osman peppers this bittersweet but still entertaining mystery with Easter-egg pop culture references and neatly ties up a few threads that audiences may not have even realized were loose, rewarding careful listeners and making for a satisfying conclusion.
VERDICT Osman doesn’t miss a beat with this mystery that is equal parts funny, clever, and heartbreaking. Listeners will relish another visit with the members of the Thursday Murder Club.
