When Agnes Glin’s grandmother and infant aunt were murdered in Bifröst, Iceland, her grandfather lived with the accusations for a short time before fleeing to America with his nine-year-old son. Agnes grew up loving her grandfather, and a year after his death, she agrees to go to Bifröst to meet with a podcaster for an interview 40 years after the still-unsolved murders. At 27, Agnes never heard the cruel stories told in the small town. She arrives just in time to see posters of a missing young woman, a blond who resembles Agnes. The two cases of young women blend together in Agnes’s troubled mind as she copes with her own loneliness and terror, trying to kick her opioid addiction after the incident that tore her leg and ankle apart. With no family stories to guide her, she’s determined to prove her grandfather’s innocence in the earlier case. Although Agnes is a self-absorbed protagonist, she fights through her pain to uncover a killer.
VERDICT This atmospheric, slow-paced suspense from Larsen (Shutter) will appeal to readers who enjoy descriptive crime novels set in isolated Nordic countries.
