Scholars thirsting for previously undiscovered biographical material will be pleased to hear of this new compilation of Bram Stoker's journal entries, written between 1871 and 1878 (before he wrote Dracula in 1897). Edited by Dacre Stoker (born in Montreal to Bram Stoker's youngest brother, George Stoker) and Dracula scholar Miller (formerly English, Memorial Univ. of Newfoundland; A Dracula Handbook), this volume offers a significant counterpoint to the scholarly argument that Stoker's native Dublin is absent from his oeuvre. Organized thematically rather than chronologically, each section begins with an introduction by the editors and includes footnotes; the format will likely frustrate readers rather than help them, however. Many of the entries are undated, and this makes drawing connections and tracing developments over time extraordinarily difficult. Appendixes include a family time line and pagination key for the original journal.
VERDICT Despite drawbacks, this will be of interest to Stoker scholars and fans curious about how the author's life influenced his most famous work, but a pass for more casual audiences.
