Lyon’s (
Kilmer’s Ghost) uneven supernatural thriller centers on a mysterious dog that both blesses and curses its owners. After being released from prison, Jimmy Myer gets a job in a morgue. While driving the body of a psychic to his hometown, Jimmy hits a strange dog. He then returns the dog’s body to its owner, Colman Moyer, a reclusive billionaire who offers Jimmy the chance of a lifetime. Meanwhile, detective Artemis Blackwell is investigating a series of disappearances, with the trail leading to Moyer’s home and his mysterious canine companion. Lyon packs the story with plot elements, including clairvoyance and some missing Internet celebrities, but some of these feel extraneous to the story. The overall plot is held together with exposition that prevents the characters, including the dog, from developing as characters. However, Victor Warren’s voicework keeps the novel’s multiple characters distinct, and the climax is intense, with the dead rising to deliver bombastic karmic justice.
VERDICT A perfect ghost story for fans of The Amityville Horror or listeners who prefer not-so-subtle scares. The short runtime makes this a quick supernatural thriller that ends with a decidedly loud bang.
