An Instagram influencer and the mother of two children, Fruits has been both a stay-at-home and a work-at-home mom. During her children’s younger years, the author told her now ex-husband that she is a lesbian. They divorced, but he remained in the household to co-parent. In this book, the author discusses many of her most challenging experiences—not loving motherhood, not immediately feeling close to her baby, coping with negative feelings toward a partner, and handling sex life challenges. Whether choosing breast or bottle, childbirth or adoption, giving birth in a bathtub or on a bus, the book attempts to remove shame from parenting decisions. Readers are told they have permission to make mistakes and live in a place of self-autonomy. Written in a casual, friendly tone, the book is filled with black-and-white drawings with a hint of pink. It is a quick and easy read for new moms who can (as encouraged by the author) skip around in the book to find a topic of interest.
VERDICT This is a feel-better guide, more than a how-to book. Many parents will relate to its low-key voice and tone of acceptance.
