The inhabitants of sleepy Piedras Blancas have reason to be concerned after bodies wash ashore on their beach, bloodless and headless. The sheriff is baffled, but a local shop owner is convinced it's the work of a beast purported to inhabit the town's lonely stretch of coast. Meanwhile, romance blossoms for young lovers Lucy (Jeanne Carmen) and Fred (Don Sullivan), much to the consternation of Lucy's perpetually scowling lighthouse keeper father, who also worries that the seven-foot-tall secret he's been feeding underneath the rocks of the lighthouse may be his daughter's undoing. Before long, the town is painted in plasmatic vermillion in the monster's wake.
VERDICT Monster showcases both the good (a remarkable creature suit and sterling cinematography) and bad (narrative sloppiness) inherent in many 1950s creature features, with the result a classic monster entertainment that craftily delivers fun, spine-tingling moments.
