At a house party in the country, Stella Hobhouse runs into Teddy Hayes, whom she spoke to at the British Museum, and agrees to sit for a sketch. Teddy was afraid he would never find his anonymous muse from the museum, so he is thrilled to finally meet Stella properly. Teddy discovers Stella is an untrained artist, so he keeps in touch with her by letter after the house party. The two meet again in London, and Teddy realizes a marriage of convenience would solve both of their woes. Teddy would have his muse to model for his paintings, and Stella would obtain a home, security, and free drawing lessons from Teddy. Neither will admit they are falling for the other. Stella’s self-esteem has been eroded by her brother and the cruelty of high society during her first season, while Teddy is dealing with social stigma because of the paralysis in his legs. Only after finding the unconditional support they have been missing can Stella and Teddy chance reaching for the stars.
VERDICT Series fans will be thrilled that the last of the four horsewomen finds her happily-ever-after. Characters from prior installments feature significantly, so readers should begin with The Siren of Sussex.
