OrangeReviewStar.span style = 'font-style:italic'>Time journalist and editor Kluger (The Sibling Effect) provides an in-depth look at narcissism and why it is becoming more prevalent in modern society. Clinically diagnosed narcissistic personality disorder occurs in only one percent of the general population but is becoming more commonly diagnosed. In addition, the author writes, individuals can exhibit narcissistic character traits without possessing the actual disorder. The "look at me" mentality is prevalent in today's culture, from the obsession with "selfies" to grandiose ramblings on social media sites—people have become preoccupied with sharing the minutiae of their lives. Kluger believes narcissistic behavior is related to childhood development as well as cultural attitudes. Narcissists are easily identifiable, and he provides numerous examples of such personalities that can be found in everyone's life.
VERDICT This thoroughly engrossing book contains a plethora of information and is not bogged down by statistics. Although it's intended for the casual reader, academics and anyone interested in psychology will find it an invaluable resource. Those looking for a self-help title may be interested in Sandy Hotchkiss's Why Is it Always About You?? (2003). [See Prepub Alert, 3/10/14.]
