German cardiologist Michalsen (clinical complementary medicine, Charité Univ. Medical Ctr., Berlin; Medicinal Leech Therapy) has dedicated his career to the advancement of natural wellness and integrative therapies, particularly in Europe. This title covers a lot of integrative medicine ground and is intended to promote and scientifically substantiate natural therapies that include fasting, a plant-based diet, yoga, sun and forest bathing, Ayurveda, mindfulness, exercise, and, yes, leeches. Sprinkled with case studies throughout, the book provides inspiration and more evidence that natural therapies can and do heal. Speaking as a physician, the author is careful to suggest that these treatments can be used in conjunction with more conventional ones such as pharmaceuticals and surgery. The final 25 pages are references and citations, which prove the richness of the science, but some might wish for the addition of a reader-friendly index.
VERDICT DIY health readers and fans of natural medicine will find this title scientifically validating and filled with new information.
