Beautiful Phoebe Miller is a reclusive heiress in a well-to-do Chicago suburb who enjoys privacy and drinking lots of wine in this shrewdly plotted domestic suspense story. She and therapist husband Wyatt have been married for ten years, but their bonds are strained after losing one child and facing multiple failed fertility treatments. After her business magnate father dies, women stream into the news with reports of harassment and rape. When a new family moves in nearby, isolated Phoebe finds a friend in Vicki Napier, who may have an abusive husband, and a lover in her college-bound son Jake. An abrupt twist occurs when a body is found and all might be guilty. Perhaps the driver of the blue car that has clearly been stalking Phoebe knows more.
VERDICT The plot details somewhat test believability, but this first foray into suspense by horror/dystopian short story writer Dickson (Strings) is a chilling tale that offers a most delectable diversion. The author is definitely one to watch. [See Prepub Alert, 1/23/19.]
